Powerball jackpot hits $1 billion mark after no winner in Monday's drawing
The Powerball jackpot has climbed to a staggering $1 billion after no one matched all six numbers in Monday's drawing, making it the third largest prize in the game's history and the seventh largest in U.S. lottery history.

According to the Powerball website, the winning numbers for Monday's drawing were 5, 8, 9, 17, 41 and red Powerball 21. The jackpot was estimated at $900 million, but no ticket matched all six numbers.

The next drawing will be on Wednesday, July 19, at 10:59 p.m. ET. The lucky winner will have the option of taking the annuity prize of $1 billion paid out in 30 annual installments or a lump sum payment of $516.8 million before taxes.

The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, according to Powerball.

While the grand prize eluded everyone on Monday, there were some big winners who matched five white balls. Five tickets sold in Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, New York and Pennsylvania won $1 million each. Another three tickets sold in Arkansas, Georgia and Texas won $2 million each by adding the Power Play option for an extra $1 per play.

The last time someone won the Powerball jackpot was on April 19, when a ticket sold in Ohio matched all six numbers and won $252.6 million.

The Powerball is not the only lottery game with a huge jackpot this week. The Mega Millions jackpot has grown to an estimated $640 million after no one won on Friday. The next Mega Millions drawing will be on Tuesday, July 18, at 11 p.m. ET.

Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
